Jayden Matombo entered the world at the Newburyport fire station on Thursday, and he and his parents were then taken to Anna Jaques Hospital.

Three Newburyport firefighters delivered a healthy baby boy at a city fire station on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Humphrey Matombo of Haverhill arrived around noon at Fire Station 2 on Storey Avenue, saying his wife, who was in labor, wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time to have her baby. The child’s head was crowning when the couple arrived, the fire department said in a statement.

Firefighters Robert Morse, John Stomboly, and Joshua Mesina stepped in to help, and delivered the baby boy, Jayden Matombo. He was a healthy baby weighing 8 pound 6 ounces, fire officials said.

Paramedics took Jayden and his mother, Memory Chihwayi, to Anna Jaques Hospital. They are both doing well, fire officials said.

“This was the first time any of these three firefighters have delivered a baby while on duty at the fire department,” Fire Chief Christopher LeClaire said. “This was truly outstanding work by our guys and something I’m sure they will always remember.”
