Route 24 was closed Friday afternoon to allow utility companies to repair lines that were damaged during a two-car crash that sent three people to the hospital, including a 23-year-old woman who was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital.

State Police tweeted at 1:43 p.m. that both the north and southbound lanes of the major highway were closed to allow the repair work. Parts of the highway were closed for about five hours earlier Friday following the crash.

“Expect delays,” State Police tweeted.

No estimate was given of when the highway will reopen.

According to State Police, the 23-year-old woman was seriously injured when the car she was in colliding with another vehicle in Avon, a crash that sent the vehicle she was riding in crashing into a tree and utility pole on the side of the highway.

The crash was reported to the Avon Fire Department at 2:07 a.m. and arriving firefighters found two victims “outside the vehicle off the side of the highway with significant injuries,’’ according to the department’s posting on its Facebook page.

The woman was rushed by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital with “serious injuries,” Procopio wrote.

The second woman, who was believed to be the driver, was rushed by ambulance to Good Samaritan Medical Center for treatment of unspecified injuries.

The operator of the second vehicle, a man, was also injured and was rushed to an area hospital for treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Procopio wrote.

Traffic was being detoured through Brockton and Avon.

WCVB reported just before 5 a.m. that the crash involved two vehicles, and a passenger was ejected during the wreck.
