Monday won’t be fun for runners heading from Hopkinton to Boston.

The combination of rain, wind, and cool weather will make it a messy day.

The bulk of the heavy rain will move into the city between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to Stephanie Dunten of the National Weather Service. The rain will likely depart the area between 7 and 9 p.m., she said. The Boston area will see rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, Dunten said. In the higher elevations, it could be as much as 3 inches.

Wind gusts also will be a factor for Boston Marathon participants. Gusts were around 35 miles per hour early Monday, Dunten said. Gusts will dip slightly later on but could increase in the event of an isolated thunderstorm, she said.

A gloomy day will also be a chilly one. Temperatures in Boston should rise into the mid-40s and might — might — briefly hit 50 before falling, Dunten said.

Thanks to cool temperatures, areas west of Interstate 495 were seeing freezing rain, sleet, and snow early Monday, Dunten said. The speed limit on some parts of the Massachusetts Turnpike was reduced to 40 m.p.h. About 360 crews were out treating roads in Western and Central Massachusetts, according to MassDOT.
