A state trooper made an unusual rescue Thursday morning when a group of ducklings was spotted crossing the road on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Westboro, police said.

A passing driver alerted trooper Evan MacLean to the ducklings on the roadway, State Police said in a statement posted to Facebook. The rescue was made around 11 a.m., spokesman Dave Procopio said in an e-mail.

“When he arrived on scene, he found these young travelers and helped them off the road to a safer route of travel,” police said in the statement. “Must have been coming from last weekend’s Duckling Day in Boston.”
