For Yohanny Medina Herrera and many other youths living in America illegally, President Obama’s announcement yesterday that the federal government will allow young immigrants eligibility for work permits was a game-changer. But the new policy was especially significant for top-tier students like Herrera — young people who found that being valedictorian added biting irony to the legal limbo that prevented them from pursuing college or employment. “At least now it’ll be the beginning of something,” Herrera said.

They are still stuck. Now he has made it even harder for a permanaent solution to be agreed upon. He is incapable of working on solutions with members of Congress. Once again, he has put himself first. That's leadership?
"I can do this without Congress", says President Obama! The next declaration by this President is his cancellation of the national election. His power now is now unlimited and he alone will make laws for Americans. His Attorney General decides that some federal laws are bad and not to be enforced. Executive orders have been issued in unparalled numbers. Secretaries as adjuncts to his executive branch have been replaced by czars without approval of Congress. The beat goes on. It is no longer about politics or policies. Hold your breath until this election in November actually happens.
It is obvious from these two comments that the commentators do not understand the President's authority whether it be Obama or Bush or anyone else. The President is the administrative officer of the Federal govt. and has the authority to do exactly what he did. While I agree it was political, it was also the right thing to do.
While I understand this is nothing more than a shrewd political ploy by Obama to build a stronger base with Hispanics, I also feel it is long overdue for this country to move forward a reasonable policy on illegal immigration. Our worst President ever (Bush) used signing statements all the time to bypass Congress all the time, so why the shock when Obama uses a similar strategy? While this new policy will hopefully move the process forward, I cannot help but think the standard set by Obama is too low. This country is a magnet for the brightest and most ambitious, so why not be more selective? We use the H1-B program to recruit highly skilled foreigners to our country, but only expect a GED from the offspring of illegal immigrants? No English proficiency requirements or marketable skills? One senses that if the bar were raised higher, this policy would not have the desired political affect on a certain demographic Obama is trying to appease. Congratulations Yohanny - well done! Don't look back. Good luck in college in the fall.
"But Drew Faust, president of Harvard University, said Saturday that Obama's declaration will be pivotal for "extraordinary young people" around the country" ____________________________________________________________________________ WOW! You SUCKERS that have already graduated from Harvard and think that your degree is worth anything. Now we know that Harvard will PANDER to anything that it thinks will get the school more government money (at the expense of you U.S. taxpayer SUCKERS. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- And now we know why Harvard is perfectly happy to accept Elizabeth Warren's PHONY claim of Cherokee heritage. It's to get those extra government Affirmative Action funds from our President, who although completely UNQUALIFIED, jumped ahead of the pack using Affirmative Action.------------------------------------- And of course, Obama has no intention of stopping right there. How many extra votes would he get if he only gets them from "extraordinary" students? Not many. ---------------The Globe and Harvard are parroting the government line that this is ONLY for "extraordinary" students. ----------If you believe that, then you also believe that the Brooklyn Bridge is again up for sale. NEXT will be an announcement that it would be UNFAIR if only talented students were given this opportunity. (And to emphasize this new point there will be some carefully staged "protests" to make it appear that there is public support for adding many more Hispanics to the vote pandering rolls). --------And you can be sure when that occurs, Harvard will say NOTHING. They know where their extra tuition money is coming from.
They are criminals and should be treated as such. Obama will pardon all the prisoners if they promised to vote for him.
Congratulations!! You've qualified yourself for the Boston Globe's most idiotic statement of the week!! Stay tuned for more information on our list of great prizes!
Congress would never work with the President on this issue. But of course you know that. You are being both willfully ignorant and intentionally obtuse.
Everything free in America!
