Prosecutors ask judge to limit access to Bulger evidence

Federal prosecutors are urging a judge not to lift a protective order in gangster James “Whitey” Bulger’s pending criminal case. In a filing Monday in US District Court in Boston, prosecutors wrote that the items covered by the order, which bars Bulger’s legal team from sharing evidence provided by the government with anyone except witnesses and people mentioned in court records, include highly sensitive informant reports and grand jury proceedings. Bulger’s lawyers contend they need to share information under seal with people from all walks of life to properly defend their client, who stands accused of participating in 19 murders. The Boston Globe is also seeking to have the order lifted.
