Simmons proposal for Brighton field draws criticism

College seeks a deal for use of Daly Field

A bill to allow Simmons College to build new sports fields in a state-owned Brighton park has drawn protests from environmental groups and park users who say the public could be shut out of the Charles River waterfront space.

The Legislature could vote next week on the plan to lease the worn Daly Field for up to 30 years to a group that would give preference to Simmons College, the Brighton High School football team, and the Allston-Brighton Little League for practices. Simmons has agreed to spend $5 million to build two new fields, a running track, tennis courts, a river path, and other amenities at the site.

This could be a win-win-win for parks, the local users and the river environment. This place has been trashed for decades and needs a sugar-daddy to fix it up. The river will be better off with good streambank plantings, run-off controls and path improvements.

Let's see Simmons PT program is on probation for non compliance and so they go and spend money on a baseball field. How about putting that money to get better teachers.
