Head-on crash on Route 1 kills one in Salisbury

A head-on collision between two cars on Route 1 in Salisbury late New Year’s Eve claimed one life, and likely will result in charges being filed against one driver, local police said. The vehicles collided on the Gillis Bridge, which connects Salisbury and Newburyport, at about 11:20 p.m. Monday, police said. The crash occurred after the driver of a 1999 Lincoln Town Car, traveling north, entered the southbound lane, police said. The other car was a 1997 Mercury Marquis. Neither driver has been identified. The victim was a passenger in the Town Car, whose driver will be charged, police said. “It was just awful,” Salisbury police Sargeant Robert Roy said in a telephone interview Tuesday. The accident remains under investigation, and police will not identify the victim until family members are notified, he added. “We are having a terribly difficult time locating a next of kin,” he said. Route 1, a state highway, cuts through the seacoast town on the New Hampshire border.
