Gabriel E. Gomez, the Cohasset businessman who is running as a Republican in the US Senate special election, lobbied Democratic Governor Deval Patrick to give him the temporary appointment to the seat after John F. Kerry resigned to become secretary of state.
Gomez’s campaign confirmed that Gomez, a wealthy private equity manager from Cohasset, made the appeal to the governor because he wanted to give Patrick a chance to display a bipartisan spirit.

So we have a guy who donated to Democrats then headed an embarrassing attempt at a swiftboat campaign against the President, who lobbied the Gov for the interim appointment but probably would have broken the handshake agreement and run in the general anyway.
