Driver swerves to avoid couch cushions, dies in crash on I-91

A driver died in a fiery crash Sunday evening after swerving to avoid couch cushions in the middle of Interstate 91 near Longmeadow and colliding with a tractor-trailer, State Police said. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was northbound at around 5:51 p.m. when it swerved, then collided with the truck in the adjacent lane. The Jeep caught fire on impact, and the driver died in the blaze, police said. Northbound traffic was halted until around 8:45 p.m. The name of the victim was not immediately known, and police declined to release the name of the tractor-trailer driver. Anyone who may have seen a dark-colored pickup truck pulled over on the highway immediately prior to the crash, or who has information about the vehicle, is asked to contact the State Police’s Springfield barracks at 413-736-8390.
