Dr. Curtis Prout, 96, physician, advocate for prison health care

Dr. Curtis Prout a primary care physician for more than 65 years, retiring at 95, a year before he died. In 1972, while he was Governor Francis W. Sargent’s personal physician, Dr. Prout was appointed to lead a federally-funded project to improve medical care in the state’s prisons. “Generosity is the mark of the true physician; to deny it is to lower ourselves in the public eye and in our own eye,’’ Dr. Prout once wrote.
