Ervin Lyon, at 76; was MIT scientist, pilot, car dealer

With plainspoken wisdom born of his Texas roots, Ervin “Bud’’ F. Lyon was an MIT-trained research scientist who was as comfortable handling rattlesnakes as he was equipment in a laboratory. He cofounded American Power Conversion Corp. and launched a string of luxury car dealerships that grew into the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group. “Stay well. Laugh often and have many excellent adventures,’’ Dr. Lyon told friends, having spent a lifetime following his own advice.
