Dick Batchelder; hoops coach helped children love the game

Dick Batchelder coached high school basketball teams in Rockport and Beverly to championships and tournament appearances, and was known as “Mr. Giveaway’’ for helping organize a program through which the Celtics gave free tickets. “One of the things Dad was most proud of was that he would eventually through the years bring hundreds of kids to those giveaways for the Boston Celtics, many of them seeing their first professional basketball game because of my Dad,’’ said his son Richard Jr.
