Mortimer Appley; ‘builder’ led Clark University amid unrest

Taking over as president of Clark University in Worcester in 1974, Mortimer Appley was “an accomplished academician, who also provided a firm hand in guiding Clark through a period of fiscal uncertainty and strengthened the institution during his decade as president,’’ said David Angel, the university’s current president. A half-century career in academia as a teacher and administrator brought Dr. Appley from the University of Denver to Harvard University. “Academia was his life,’’ his son Richard said.
