Plans for new town garage

The Planning Board on Thursday will hear a presentation on the potential relocation of the town’s highway garage. The town has been exploring the possibility of building a new garage on land it would acquire on Great Meadow Road to the north of the existing garage, according to Anthony Fields, Burlington’s planning director. Both sites are within the aquifer that feeds the town’s water supply. Fields said a new facility would allow enough garage space to shelter all the Department of Public Works vehicles, as well as those of the Recreation Department, which are now stored at Overlook Park. The current highway garage is only large enough to be used for maintenance work; vehicles are generally stored unsheltered in the yard. “To try to renovate and rebuild the existing site is not logistically or financially feasible,” Fields said. The Jan. 23 Town Meeting is set to consider appropriating funds to further study the potential relocation. - John Laidler
