Schools sprinting to healthy eating

The local public schools are embracing new school lunch standards mandated by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which was signed into law by President Obama in December 2010. The new guidelines require school meals to include more whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, and to have less sodium. North Reading is ahead of schedule on the federal requirements, which are expected to take effect in September. To see a presentation summarizing the new guidelines, visit www.north-reading.k12.ma.us and click on “Lunch Menus.”
