Big boost for Whispering Hill

The city will be using a $500,000 state grant to help build recreational facilities at the Whispering Hill property west of Cambridge Road. The project calls for development of a park with a multipurpose natural turf field, a parking area, and rehabbed storage facility. The grant was part of $14 million awarded to 25 Massachusetts communities this past Tuesday to enhance parks and recreational facilities. Woburn’s grant was for the maximum amount available through the program. Mayor Scott D. Galvin recently asked the City Council to authorize an $876,000 bond to cover the overall project cost. The council’s Finance Committee last Monday voted to recommend the full council approve the bond order. The city acquired the 74.5-acre Whispering Hill site for $6.7 million from Northeastern University in 2010 with the help of a separate $500,000 grant under the same state program. - John Laidler
