City seeking breakwater

City officials have taken initial steps toward having a breakwater built in Lynn Harbor. The need for one to protect the city’s shoreline from storm waves was mentioned in a waterfront master plan the city completed several years ago. According to James Marsh, Lynn’s community development director, city officials recently met informally with representatives of state and federal agencies to discuss the idea and seek their feedback. He said agency officials identified some concerns about a breakwater, including possible adverse impact on the marine environment, but did not point to major impediments that would stop the project. Marsh said a breakwater would protect the city’s Seaport Landing Marina and private marinas, and would also help spur private investment along the waterfront. The next step, he said, is for the city to seek a study grant. He said the next step is for the city to seek a grant to study the idea.
