Aldermen blast T cuts, hikes

The Board of Aldermen voted unanimously, 11-0, to oppose cuts proposed for MBTA bus service in the city, along with fare increases. The transit agency, facing a $161 million budget deficit for the fiscal year that starts July 1, has proposed sweeping changes to services, including raising fares and cutting services throughout Greater Boston. Proposed changes for Melrose include eliminating bus routes 106, 131, 132, 136, and 137. Parking at the Oak Grove commuter rail station would also increase from the current $5.50 per day, to $7.50 per day. Commuter rail service would end on weekdays at 10 p.m., and would be eliminated on weekends. The aldermen’s resolution is merely advisory, but members said it’s good for T officials to know where they stand. “We need to let the T know that we understand they need to do something,’’ said Ward 3 Alderman Francis X. Wright Jr. , who sponsored the resolution. “But we have to let them know the [impact] this will have in Melrose.’’ - Kathy McCabe
