Charter alternative proposed by schools

Representatives from the Somerville School Committee, the mayor’s administration, and the Somerville Teachers Association are exploring the launch of an innovation school in the city. The option would allow for an in-district charter-like school, while keeping state funding in the district, according to a statement by the School Department. “More local autonomy will help to accelerate and broaden the programs that are already in place for our high-risk students,’’ said Anthony Pierantozzi, school superintendent. The idea comes after the proposed Somerville Progressive Charter School drew intense criticism during a hearing late last year. Hundreds turned out to protest and demand that state education authorities deny the school group’s request for the charter, which would focus on English-language learners. If the progressive charter is recommended by education commissioner Mitchell Chester, it must pass a Feb. 28 vote of the state education department’s board of directors. - Matt Byrne
