Focus on parkway planning

Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr. plans to present to the City Council this month a proposed zoning measure aimed at attracting and helping shape future development along Revere Beach Parkway, or Route 16. The plan would establish a Parkway Overlay District that would define future allowable uses of properties along the corridor. It would also establish new design requirements, including that new buildings be placed closer to the street with most of the parking behind them. “This overlay district is a means to encourage smart growth in our city,’’ DeMaria said in a prepared statement. “We want businesses and development that will enhance the quality of life along the parkway, not take away from it.’’ DeMaria is also proposing a citywide linkage fee that developers of all new construction or significant renovations would have to pay annually to help mitigate the impact of their projects on city streets, parks, and recreation facilities. - John Laidler
