Community garden to sprout

The new community garden behind the senior center will soon be opening for the season. The garden consists of 15 4-foot-by-4-foot plots, available to town residents on a first-come, first-served basis to plant vegetables, fruits, and flowers, according to Council on Aging director Nancy Williams. About 10 of the spots already have been reserved. Anyone interested in the remaining spots should call the senior center at 617-846-8538. Williams said the community garden, the town’s first, was developed last year through the efforts of employees from the public works, police, and fire departments, the town grants administrator, Peter Lombardi, and local resident Anita Petricone. Williams credits Town Manager Jim McKenna with the idea. The project involved constructing the raised beds and preparing the soil. This will mark the first growing season. Town officials have said if the garden proves popular, they may look to establish others.
