Artists sought to beautify boxes

Local artists have until Friday to submit proposals to paint one of six utility boxes in the downtown. Salem is seeking the submissions through ArtBox, a program launched by the city and a group of residents at the end of last year to transform utility boxes into original works of art. Six boxes will be painted this year. In addition to beautifying the boxes, the program is intended to promote individual artists and the city’s burgeoning arts scene. It was inspired by the response to the painting of a utility box on Essex Street two years ago by Greg Orfanos of Beverly. The works will be judged by an independent group of creative professionals. The painting will start in June, and each winner will receive a $500 stipend. For more information, go to www.salem.com/pages/artbox. - John Laidler
