Charter school seeks location

A public charter school slated to open in September 2013 is seeking a location within city limits. Last month, the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education approved the incorporation of the Collegiate Charter School of Lowell, which will be run by SABIS International, a private education management company based in Minnesota. Current plans call for up to 540 students to be admitted into grades K-5 during the 2013-2014 school year, with one grade being added each year until it becomes a 1,200-student K-12 school. Some sites being considered include the former Varnum School, Butler Middle School, and Rogers Middle School. Finding a temporary location also is being considered.
