Moving forward on the mall

The Salem Redevelopment Authority on Wednesday is set to review a proposed series of improvements to the Essex Street pedestrian mall. A consultant team prepared a conceptual design of the improvements based on input provided at a series of four public forums last year. At Wednesday’s meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Salem Five Community Room, 210 Essex St., the Redevelopment Authority will hear a presentation from the consultants on the proposed design. The focus of the improvements is to address the uneven surface, maintenance difficulties, blocked views, and unclear pedestrian paths on the mall. The design calls for removing the fountain at Washington and Essex streets; removing plantings that block pedestrian access and planting canopy trees, and replacing uneven cobblestones with block pavement material. Should the Redevelopment Authority approve the conceptual design, a more detailed design would then be submitted to the city’s Design Review Board for its review and recommendation.
