Sign up for tax-break lottery

Town officials are advising residents that applications are being accepted through April 20 for this year’s program allowing senior citizens to cover part of their property taxes through volunteer service. Residents age 60 and over who serve as volunteers in town departments can earn a reduction of up to $500 on their annual tax bill. To be credited, the participant must have an ownership interest and reside year-round in their home. The volunteer work must be completed by Oct. 15. Application packets are available at the Winthrop Senior Center. Volunteers will be selected by lottery. For more information, call the center at 617-846-8538. - John Laidler
