Stoneham resident George E. Ghareeb, a retired ophthalmologist, has been named the 2012 recipient of the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Award for Distinguished Service. Ghareeb, who retired several years ago but continues to serve the medical society, has been a member of the organization since 1967 and has been devoted to improving the viability of the society so that the organization can fulfill its role as an advocate for patients and physicians. Through his strong voice as secretary-treasurer and now as an adviser to the Committee on Finance, he has shared both his good judgment and institutional memory at crucial times, according to a written statement released by the society.
