Report on Universal Steel site Wednesday

Cleanup at the former Universal Steel and Trading Co. site is the subject of a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the third-floor conference room of the City Hall Annex, 120 Washington St. The city is working with the US Environmental Protection Agency, the state Department of Environmental Protection, and MassDevelopment to identify funding to clean up the pollutants at the vacant former industrial site, located at 297-305 Bridge St. At the meeting, officials from the city and the three agencies will provide an update on the status of the project and answer questions. The approximately 1.2-acre Universal Steel site was used for metal recycling and reclamation activities. The property contains a vacant two-story warehouse building of about 8,000 square feet along its western edge, and an approximately 5,200-square-foot former scrap metal building at its southwest corner. Once the cleanup is completed, the city plans to use the site for temporary parking during the construction of the MBTA garage, and then solicit proposals to redevelop the property.
