The MBTA is inviting area residents to take part in a community recycling event Saturday at the Salem commuter rail station’s parking lot on Bridge Street.
The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is an opportunity for free drop-off of items for which disposal fees are usually charged. The only charge is for televisions, which will be accepted for a fee of 35 cents per pound.
The MBTA will arrange for the dismantling and recycling of all the collected materials. Accepted items will include electronics such as computers, monitors, VCRs, and cellphones; metals such as swing sets, fencing, pots, and pans; small and large appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators; and yard and power equipment.
Items that will not be accepted include wood, glass, hazardous waste, fluorescent bulbs, paint, and tires.
The MBTA hopes to hold similar recycling events in other communities in Greater Boston.
