School district issues 54 layoff notices

Fifty-four school district employees will lose their jobs June 30, according to Superintendent Stacy Scott. The layoffs were necessary in order to address a $1.1 million deficit in the school budget for next fiscal year, Scott said. He said programs most likely affected are the language program at Lakeview Junior High School, course offerings at the high school, and specialty classes such as music, art, and gym at the elementary level. In all, the district will lose 21 classroom teachers, 21 paraprofessionals, and 12 custodians and administrative support personnel, with the layoffs based on seniority. Scott said the chances are quite slim that any of the employees will be rehired in September.
