Malden frees up parking for shoppers

In an effort to ease parking around Pleasant Street, the Malden Redevelopment Authority and the Chamber of Commerce have a plan to reserve the ground floors of the CBD Garage on Centre Street and the Jackson Street garage for patrons of local businesses.

The plan would close the first floor areas before 10 a.m., preventing the rush of commuters accessing the Orange Line station from taking spaces that are the shortest distance from businesses, the two groups said.
“This is a brilliant idea to promote business in downtown Malden,” said Ted Coates, director of the Chamber, in a statement. “Local merchants say many of their patrons did not use the garage . . . because they had to drive up several levels.”

Nearly every business in Malden Square will validate parking for the garages, Coates said, so the garage option is similar to street parking.
