A series of signs have been erected on Chestnut Street to mark the site of the African Burying Ground. The red and yellow markers provide information of the city’s 18th century African community and the cemetery where as many as 200 are interred. For instance, one reads, “In 1760 Portsmouth town records refer to this site as the ‘Negro Burying Yard.’ Over time, as Portsmouth grew, the African Burying Ground was paved over, built over, and overlooked.’’ The signs are a collaboration between the African Burying Ground Committee and 3S Artspace.
