The Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing June 25 on the potential creation of a cultural district. The initiative evolved from an economic stimulus bill passed by the state in 2010, and earlier this year sections of Rockport, Gloucester, Lynn, Pittsfield, and Boston became the first to receive the designation. According to a statement released by the slectmen, “Cultural districts can help local arts, humanities, and science organizations improve the quality and range of their public programs so that more local families can benefit from them; can enhance the experience for visitors and thus attract more tourist dollars and tax revenue; and can attract artists, cultural organizations, and entrepreneurs of all kinds, enhancing property values and making communities more attractive.” The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the T.O.H.P. Burnham Library.
