The city was recently awarded a grant to help fund the planting of an orchard at Spence Farm and an irrigation system to serve it. The grant is being provided through Communities Take Root, an annual program offered by Edy’s Fruit Bars and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation. Communities selected through online voting earn grants. Woburn was one of five winners in the first round of the 2012 voting, finishing fourth with 25,549 votes out of 103 communities nationwide. The initial planting took place on June 10 when Michael Meagher, as part of an Eagle Scout project, planted 14 dwarf fruit trees. Later this summer, the city will plant an additional 25 semi-dwarf trees using funding from the grant, according to Paul Medeiros, chairman of the Agricultural Commission.
