Selectmen take on town yard replacement plan

The Board of Selectmen is working to consolidate information culled from tens of thousands of dollars worth of studies commissioned to determine the future of the dilapidated town yard facility. After a $22 million relocation proposal was withdrawn at Town Meeting in 2010 and an $18.5 million relocation proposal was rejected at Town Meeting in April, board chairman Paul Salafia decided that rather than appoint another task force and pay for new studies, the board would assemble the “enormous amounts of information” available from prior studies, analyze it, and determine the best course of action for the future of the 47-year-old town yard facility. Most recently, selectmen have been discussing the option of rebuilding on the current 3-acre Lewis Street site, with a number of satellite locations scattered around town to house all of the Department of Public Works operations. Once the board comes to a consensus, it hopes to make a presentation to the Finance Committee and gather public input.
