Selectmen approve raise for town manager

By a vote of 3 to 1, the Board of Selectmen approved a salary increase for Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner, who has announced plans to retire June 30, 2013. The board’s vote means that Hechenbleikner is in line to receive a salary of $140,000 for his final year of employment with the town. The board will have to ask Town Meeting to increase the budget accordingly. At Town Meeting in April, before Hechenbleikner announced his retirement, the selectmen requested and received approval for a salary of $135,375 for the town manager, a raise of 2 percent, which would be in line with the salary hikes for other town employees. However, after learning that Hechenbleikner planned to retire, the selectmen decided that they should increase the salary to be more in line with current market rates and to better reflect Hechenbleikner’s level of experience, noting that Burlington recently hired a new town manager at a salary of $160,000, Winchester at $150,000, and Belmont is advertising at a salary range of $140,000 to $160,000.
