The city has joined the Better Buildings Challenge, a US Department of Energy program that aims for communities to cut energy consumption 20 percent by 2020. An action plan is now being developed that will outline its plan to reduce energy use in municipal buildings, and encourage residential and commercial property owners to follow suit. The city already is working with the state to improve energy efficiency at LoConte Rink, such as by installing a lower ceiling. A plan to install energy-efficient lighting, doors, and windows at Medford High School also is being developed.
