The School Committee approved a 1 percent retroactive raise for Superintendent Marinel McGrath as part of her recent job evaluation. McGrath, who earns an annual salary of $195,000, was given high praise by committee members, who noted her ability to advance educational goals in the midst of one of the district’s most tumultuous years. Committee member Annie Gilbert acknowledged McGrath’s “incredible fortitude” as she dealt with numerous contract negotiations, a hazing scandal involving some members of the high school’s basketball team, a high school principal search, and litigation surrounding construction of the new Bancroft Elementary School. Member David Birnbach said he hopes the coming school year will see McGrath take on more academic initiatives, specifically at the high school. McGrath told the committee she is encouraged by their continued confidence in her, adding that she couldn’t have done the work she did without their support or that of the teachers.
