Area residents are invited to take part in an annual community event that benefits people with cancer and their families. Take the Lake, an annual five-kilometer run/walk around Lake Quannapowitt, will be held Sunday. Now in its 13th year, the event was created by the family of the late Janice (Mignosa) Frye, a member of the Wakefield High School class of 1980 who died of cancer in 1999. More than 4,000 walkers and runners have participated in the event over the 12 years, raising $152,000 for cancer-related charities, according to Tom Mignosa, who is Frye's brother and the lead organizer of the event. This year, all proceeds will benefit the New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, a nonprofit advocacy group for cancer survivors. The registration cost for the event is $25. Participants should meet in front of the Converse building, 100 Quannapowitt Parkway. Runners will begin at 8:30 a.m., walkers at 8:35 a.m. Donations from those who do not participate are also welcome.
