Mayor James J. Fiorentini on July 3 presented several local residents with Volunteer of the Year awards for their service to the city. The award winners include: Team Haverhill, the volunteer action group that spearheaded the creation of the Essex Street community gateway mural, “Hues of the Heart”; Doug Edison, president of Haverhill's Brightside, Inc., a nonprofit that works in partnership with the city to clean and beautify Haverhill; Kim Shumaker Ocasio, director of charity events for Ocasio's True Martial Arts, for her sponsorship and participation in Haverhill’s yearly cleanup; Christine Rau, who has adopted Columbus Park through Haverhill's Brightside and is working to beautify the area; Dianne McDermott, who created a new website for the city to promote Haverhill’s arts and culture; Lawrence Trevette, who has organized and led cleanups and improvements at the Walnut Square and John Greenleaf Whittier schools; Daniel Wentworth, who has been restoring and improving the gardens around the city’s “Welcome to Haverhill” signs; and Frederick E. Malcolm Sr., an honorary director of the Boys Girls Club of Greater Haverhill, who was honored with a lifetime achievement award for being one of the pioneering leaders to bring the Ward Hill Industrial Park to Haverhill 50 years ago.
