Aldermen approve $230.7 million budget

The Board of Aldermen approved a new city budget of $230,684,520 by a vote of 13-0,  with two members absent, after $100,000 was added to the police budget to hire new officers. The vote came 12 days after the July 2 start of the 2013 fiscal year, but 19 days before the Aug. 1 deadline imposed by the city charter. The new budget is about 1.5 percent more than last year.
