Stoneham pool opens after successful lobbying effort

The Hall Memorial Swimming Pool in Stoneham, which was to be closed this summer because of state budget cuts, has opened after local residents, business leaders, and state legislators persuaded Edward Lambert, Department of Conservation and Recreation commissioner, to reconsider the decision.

The agency, which operates the pool at 4 North Border Road, is now seeking lifeguards, according to state Senator Katherine Clark, a Melrose Democrat who also represents Lynnfield, Malden, Reading, Stoneham, and Wakefield.

The agency announced in June that the Stoneham pool would be closed this summer, citing budget issues and low attendance last year. Clark and state Representative Jason Lewis,  a Winchester Democrat who also represents Stoneham, met with Lambert and officials from Governor Deval Patrick's office and brokered a deal to reopen the pool. Local and state officials are working to find a long-term solution to keep the pool open.
