Sail Salem offers summer classes

Sail Salem, the community program, is offering a range of classes from its Winter Island base this summer. The nonprofit was organized in the summer of 2008 to offer lessons to children 8 and up. The group has since added adult and instructor-in-training classes. It also has expanded its children’s offerings to include Advanced Beginner and Adventure Sail classes, according to Jason Yarrington, vice president of Sail Salem. He said participation in the overall program is continuing to rise, estimating that more than 400 people will take part this year. While about three-quarters are young people, there are adult classes every weeknight this summer. The programs use Sail Salem's fleet of about 24 boats. The introductory classes for children are free. Fees for other classes range from $100 to $225. To register or for more information, go to www.sailsalem.org.
