The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is holding a public hearing on proposals for 11 new charter schools on Dec. 10 from 4-6 p.m. at the Saugus Public Library, 295 Central St. The hearing is one of eight that the department is holding. Among the applications are proposals by the Pioneer Charter School, a regional school in Everett, to open two new schools that would serve Saugus residents. One of the schools would be in Saugus and serve Danvers, Lynn, Peabody, Salem, and Saugus. The other would be in Woburn and serve Medford, Melrose, Saugus, Stoneham, Wakefield, and Woburn. Like the existing school, the new ones would have 360 seventh- to 12th-grade students. The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education plans to award new charters next Feb. 26.
