NSCC Presidential Scholars embark on antipoverty initiative

Seventeen North Shore Community College Presidential Scholars have embarked on a yearlong antipoverty project. Presidential Scholars is a leadership program in which North Shore Community students participate in public-service work. Most of the students apply for the program while they are high school seniors preparing to attend the college. This year’s Presidential Scholars, including four from Lynn schools, will try to raise $5,000 during the school year to support Heifer International, a nonprofit humanitarian organization that fights hunger and poverty by providing livestock, trees, seeds, and training in sound agricultural practices to people in impoverished communities around the world. In addition to fund-raising, the Presidential Scholars will hold events to raise public awareness of Heifer’s work. As part of that effort, they will have information tables on North Shore’s Lynn campus this Thursday and on Dec. 6.
