It was 1957 and Dwight D. Eisenhower was president when Robert Osgood was first elected a Town Meeting representative in Danvers. Fifty-five years later, Osgood continues to hold the position. During all those decades, he has never missed a Town Meeting session. Last week the town planned a recognition ceremony to thank Osgood for his many years of service to the town, which include having been a member of the Conservation Commission, the Danvers Bicentennial Committee, and the Historic District Commission, caretaker of the Rebecca Nurse House, and a founding member of the Danvers Alarm List Co. Town administrators, fellow Town Meeting members, and selectmen were among those expected to be on hand to honor Osgood, 83, who is the longest-serving Town Meeting member in Danvers history. The event was also intended to celebrate volunteerism in Danvers. In addition to his volunteer efforts, Osgood served as a Danvers firefighter for 30 years, retiring in 1989. The recognition event was organized by Osgood’s fellow Town Meeting member and friend, Andrea Daley. “Volunteerism in any community enhances the life of all the residents, and Bob epitomizes volunteerism,” Daley said.
