The town earlier this month was awarded the MassRecycle Municipal Recycling Award for its rubbish and recycling program. Each year, MassRecycle, a statewide nonprofit organization, recognizes a community for displaying innovation and leadership in its recycling and waste-reduction efforts. Reading’s program, which was launched in October 2010, was honored for creating additional recycling opportunities; increasing awareness of the benefits of recycling, both for the community and environment; and saving thousands of dollars for residents by eliminating fees for bulk items and reducing them for the disposal of cathode ray television sets. In the initiative’s first year, the town saved 92,000 in disposal costs and increased recycling by 40 percent. Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner credited residents of the community, the Board of Selectmen, and town staff for the success of the program.
