LoConte Memorial Rink has a new insulated ceiling and a dehumidification system, fulfilling a key goal of the city’s participation in the Better Buildings Challenge, run by the US Department of Energy. The program challenges communities to achieve a 20 percent reduction in energy use by 2020. LoConte Rink was chosen as the city’s first project for the challenge. The new equipment should keep the rink cooler, allowing for the facility to stay open for a longer season. The rink is owned by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, but the city manages it. In the last 18 months, $700,000 in improvements and upgrades have been made at LoConte, officials said.
