Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Graduate School of Education will lead a public education project next year, funded by a $2.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The program’s goal is to provide information on climate science to commuters. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is joining the effort by donating $180,000 in advertising space on subway cars and platforms. In addition, planners will develop related smartphone applications that riders can use during their commutes. Studies will also take place on the effectiveness of the campaign to see if the model could be used to improve public understanding of other issues. The three-year grant is the largest ever received by UMass Lowell Graduate School of Education faculty.
