Health effects of turbines unclear

Doreen Reilly says her family can’t sleep at night because the wind turbine 328 yards away sounds like a “jet liner hovering” over her Kingston home. During the day, Reilly said, she gets headaches because the spinning blades from the 400-foot-tall structure cause sunlight to flash like “a strobe light” throughout her home.

“You can’t escape it,” said the Leland Road resident. “I’m very concerned for my family and their health.”

Gosh, why haven't we done a study surveying the 1000s of people living in homes along the many through roads in greater Boston? Like, for example, 16, 28, 9, Highway 1, etc, etc? Go ahead, ask them the simple question: "Do you find the noise and traffic disturbing while living on this road? The authorities, or researchers, won't even attempt to carry out such studies because they know what the outcome will be: a very high percentage, much higher than the handful of people complaining about wind turbines, will answer in the affirmative. Health studies will find conclusive evidence that living along such highways have a significant impact on health and well-being. But: no one will do such a study because the solution--closing down the road--is not an option. With wind turbines as a key source of our energy, with a far lower impact on our environment than roads, should also be considered a necessity to any progressive society that intends to thrive in the 21st century. Doing without is simply not an option, it is not "alternative" energy but a primary one.

Good observation. You could have included the commuter trains that pass through many suburban cities and towns from early morning through late evening. Also the MTA trains and trolleys throughout Boston and suburbs. Let's not leave out East Boston and Revere and the planes at Logan Airport. NIMBY. A new health care concern.

Another "study" is not required. Research the global backlash to these commercial wind installations and the independent, objective scientific studies that have already been done.   Allow me to summarize it for you: Large-scale wind turbines cause significant harm to wildlife, people, and the environment. In return, because of the wind’s low density, intermittency, and high variability, they do next to nothing for reducing carbon and other emissions or dependence on other fuels.   The only people reaping the rewards on this failed science experiment are the lobbyists, the lawyers, and the windmill owners who reap subsidies, grants, and tax credits from the Feds and the state. Your health, property values, and cost of energy are all secondary to them and the government.

Gosh, you all try living near these things. Then you can comment.
